The Black Eyed Peas long anticipated seventh studio album, Masters of the Sun Vol. 1, was finally released on October 26th. This is their first album in almost eight years and their first album without Fergie, the group's staple vocalist for more than 15 years, leaving wil.i.am, apl.de.ap, and Taboo as the remaining members of the group.
There was much speculation over the last couple of years that Fergie would be replaced by many musicians. Nicole Scherzinger was originally approached to join the Black Eyed Peas in the early 2000's, but was forced to decline because she was a member of the girl group Eden's Crush (and much later, The Pussycat Dolls). Wil.i.am again considered Filipino-American Scherzinger in an interview this year with the UK's Daily Star stating:
âAnything Nicole asked me to do I would do it, though. I love that girl. We have a chat group called 'Black Eyed Peas family'. It has nothing to do with making music or money. Itâs about friendship. Itâs the three of us and Nicole. Itâs about family. Nicole is Black Eyed Peas. She is family.â
Korean rapper CL came out to perform with Black Eyed Peas and sang "Where Is The Love?" at the huge music festival "SUMMER SONIC 2017" in Japan. This sparked wildfire rumours CL would be replacing Fergie as the lead singer that year. While this didn't exactly come to fruition, CL was busy herself: writing the theme song for "My Little Pony: The Movie", joining Mark Wahlberg in her first feature film as a Hollywood actress in "Mile 22", and performing at the 2018 Winter Olympics closing ceremony at Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium.
Instead, both Nicole Scherzinger and CL feature on this album!
CL shares her stunning rapping skills in the track 'DOPENESS'. She shows no fear when she raps her verse, even after the three original members of BEP, showing she still is The Baddest Female! In the music video, CL is the leading femme fatale of a glamorous crime gang. They own sports cars, motorbikes, gold chains, and reek of DOPENESS. This collaboration is solid gold. Her home country and her fans should absolutely be proud of her.
Nicole Scherzinger features on the tenth track on the album, "WINGS". It comes to no surprise she is a fantastic singer. Her singing style is different to how she normally sings as a powerhouse pop vocalist. She is more jazzy, seductive, and whimsical, as she is heard skipping around the boys rapping verses, the popping beats, and slow electric piano.
"I am going to work hard to make her known international." These were rapper apl.de.ap's words in 2013 after successfully recruiting into his team Jessica Reynoso in the first-ever season of "The Voice of the Philippines." Since her appearance on the Filipino singing competition, Reynoso has been signed a contract with BMBX, owned by apl.de.ap. She has appeared at different music festivals internationally, and she has been tapped to perform the American national anthem at numerous NBA games. She now joins the Black Eyed Peas on their international Masters of the Sun Tour. Although uncredited, Jessica Reynoso lends her gorgeous singing talents on many tracks to their latest album.
The new album overall borrows drum beats and synth riffs from hip-hop music of the 80s and 90s. The throwback-vibes of vinyl record scratching is prevalent, especially in the tracks "CONSTANT" and "DOPENESS". They are odes to this era of music, while also adding the Black Eyed Peas' famous flavour of robotic effects on wil.i.am's vocals. Masters of the Sun Vol. 1 is a wonderful record that goes back to their roots when the Black Eyed Peas first started as an alternative hip-hop/rap group, rather than their pop albums (which I still do love). The album is political, soul-taking, and much needed in today's society. It's refreshing music as we don't hear this genre of music on mainstream radio anymore.
Masters of the Sun Vol. 1 is available on all digital platforms and good music stores.
