Philippines is undeniably a powerhouse in terms of its musicians. Pop, rock, rap, ballad, broadway, operatic–name every genres you know and Filipinos will surely cite names who have so much to offer. Who could ever forget Lea Salonga? Charice Pempengco? Apl.de.Ap of Black Eyed Peas? Or Gerphil Flores who was an Asia's Got Talent's finalist? But let's talk about their reigning Pop Superstar, Sarah Geronimo. Widely known as Philippines's Popstar Royalty and Pop Queen, she's truly iconic and one of the best.
She's a champion.
Like any other singers she started as a dreamer. She'd joined in various amateur singing contest, eager to prove she's born to be a star. And she isn't wrong. She rose to fame after she was hailed as the grand champion in 'Star For a Night', a singing contest in TV. Her winning piece was a powerful rendition of Celine Dion's 'To Love You More'. Believe me, a lot of Pinoys will surely cite her name if asked who's its original singer for she was able to popularize that song.
It turned out she isn't just a star for a night. Each year, her singing career soared higher and higher. Her 'Popstar, A Dream Come True' is currently the Bestselling Debut Album in Philippine History for it became a double diamond record. Other succeeding albums were certified platinum and multi-platinum. There's no doubt why she was nominated at World Music Awards in 2014 and competed with international artists like Adele, Beyoncé, Katty Perry and more. She was named Bestselling Philippine Artist, Best Female Philippine Act, Best Philippine Entertainer and Best Philippine Live Act then. She's also the first Filipino artist to be awarded at MNET Asian Music Awards and be included at World Top Musicians, an American website. She even became the youngest coach in The Voice franchise history.
She was more popular in pop category of music during her early years at stardom, but she added R&B, dance and EDM into her style since 2013. Sarah G's most recognized single is 'Forever's Not Enough" which showcased her skill in belting. Her other hit original songs are 'How Could You Say You Love Me', 'Ikaw', 'Sa Iyo', 'Carry My Love', 'Dahil Minahal Mo Ako', 'Sino Nga Ba Siya', 'Kilometro', 'Ikot-ikot', 'Tayo', 'Tala' and more.
She released on February 2018 her newest single 'Sandata' which topped Philippine iTunes chart after minutes of its release. She cited that Michael Jackson, Beyoncé and Celine Dion are among the artists who greatly influenced her as a musician, enough reason why she is considered a versatile performer. She never fails to surprise and wow her fans and audiences. Among the songs she nailed are Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody', Adele's 'Hello', Little Mix's 'Salute', Frozen's hit soundtrack 'Let It Go', Rihanna's 'Love The Way You Lie', Luis Fonsi's 'Despacito', The Chainsmokers' 'Don't Let Me Down', Christina Aguilera's 'Candyman', Celine Dion's songs, music of Bruno Mars and more.
The multi-award winner.
"She's a true Philippine Superstar!" Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards described her after being nominated in 2013 as Favorite Asian Act against China's Han Geng, South Korea's Psy and Malaysia's Shila Amzah. Her numerous local and international accolades reflect how great her artistry is. She's the most awarded music personality in the Myx Music Awards history. She'd received multiple awards from popular award-giving bodies in PH like Awit Awards, PMPC Star Awards for Music and Aliw Awards. Aside from World Music Awards and MNET Asian Music Awards, she'd already won at MTV EMA as Best Southeast Asian Act in 2014.
In July 2015, she represented her country with her song 'Kilometro' at 10th International Song Contest: The Global Sound. She is the first Asian to be the overall winner in the said song contest. Classic Rock Awards also recognized her as Best Asian Performer in 2016 where she performed her rock version of iconic OPM song 'Anak'. She also bagged awards like Best Female Artist of the Philippines at Big Apple Music Awards (2016), Asian Artist of the Year at Hello Asia Awards for two consecutive years (2015 & 2016), Best Filipino Act at Daf Bama Music Awards (2017) and Best Philippine Artist at International Golden Panther Music Awards 2018. She also finished 3rd (in 2016) and 2nd (in 2017) Best Solo Star at Australia's SBS PopAsia Awards.
In 2014, Disney Channel Asia chose her to reinterpret 'The Glow' (originally sung by Shannon Saunders) as the theme song of its Princess franchise. Spotify Philipines hailed her as one of the most streamed Filipino artists in 4 consecutive years (2014-2017). She's also the only Filipino female artist included at Spotify's global playlist 'Amplify: Women of the World' on March 2018 alongside Rihanna, Dua Lipa, CL, Zara Larsson and more.
Despite her great success she never forget humility. It is the prime reason why even other artists respected her much–Sandara Park of 2NE1, veteran singers Regine Velasquez and Gary Valenciano, Singapore's Gentle Bones and Indonesian superstar Anggun Cipta Sasmi to name a few. Her charisma and wholesome personality are her banners which up until now letting her inspire Filipino citizens and some persons of other races. It's not surprising why she got massive and ever-supportive fandom called Popsters. Sarah Geronimo is trully the reigning Filipino Pop Superstar.
