Critically acclaimed as a richly observed tale of female empowerment, this film featured at the Director’s Fortnight section of the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Marlina is a young widow whose grief over the loss of her husband is interrupted by a brutal gang who intend to rob and rape her. Coined by Variety film critic Maggie Lee and Tara Brady of the Irish Times as a “Feminist Satay Western”, this arthouse take on genre tropes is fresh, provocative and visually beautiful.
The arid landscapes of Sumba and the music by Zeke Khaseli and Yudhi Arfani echo the spirit of the Spaghetti Western, but the screenplay does not descend into well-worn clichés of the genre. Director Mouly Surya uses nuances of local customs, animist beliefs and cleverly subverted gender-role dialogue to chart Marlina’s journey from victim to vengeance and redemption.
The 13th annual Indonesian Film Festival (IFF) Australia presents a lineup of six diverse Indonesian films from the 26th of April to the 2nd of May, 2018 at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), Melbourne. The event aims to celebrate Indonesia’s burgeoning cinema and promote the appreciation of Indonesian culture in Australia in an attempt to bridge the gap between these two major Asia Pacific nations that are geographically close yet cognitively apart. All films have English subtitles and will be followed by a Q&A session with our guest filmmakers and hosted by Australian film critic Peter Krausz (Movie Metropolis).
