Korean-American rapper, DJ, and producer Yaeji will be hitting up Australian dance floors for the very first time this summer.
As well as the already-announced Meredith Music Festival, Yaeji will perform at The Studio, Sydney Opera House on Saturday 1 December; in Melbourne at Max Watt’s on Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 December; and at Brisbane’s The TBC Club on Saturday 8 December. Unfortunately, we are being tantalizing as all of her feature performances have already sold out. I don't know about you, but I'm constantly refreshing the Facebook event pages hoping someone couldn't get their annual leave off work to party with her in Melbourne.
Described by Pitchfork as “house music’s most exciting new voice”, the multi-talented songstress adds to a massive twelve months! She's already seen her release of ‘EP2’ (the follow-up to her self-titled 2017 debut 'EP1'), appear on the cover of FADER, score a spot on the BBC Sound of 2018 longlist, and land spots on the Sónar and Coachella festival line-ups!
Her music is whimsically tailored as she sets the beautiful late-night, hard-hitting nightclub scene in NYC combined with her sultry and laidback vocals. Yaeji merged her club influences with songwriting and hazy raps, resulting in global breakout singles “Drink I’m Sippin On” and “Raingurl”, which see her effortlessly alternate between Korean and English vocals. The music video for the single "Drink I'm Sippin On" was released on 88rising's YouTube channel in October 2017, quickly gaining over a million views in two weeks. EP2 marks Yaeji’s ascendance as a singular and leading voice in dance, hip-hop and avant-pop music.
Her own version of Drake’s “Passionfruit”, which premiered at a famed Boiler Room set last year, saw Yaeji begin her ascent to stardom in the underground scene. Her songwriting avoids party clichés and instead acts as an invitation into an intimate world where cultural identity and self-reflection are explored through dreamlike house productions that morph from whispery confessionals to dancefloor burners.
Yaeji is one of the most exciting young artists on the global stage, now splitting her time between
New York and Seoul. When at home in Brooklyn, she continues to host her ‘Curry in No Hurry’
dance nights, at which she serves up homemade Korean curry for friends – and fellow producers. This is to enhance the sensory connection between eating and listening, but let's be real, everyone loves curry, especially when it's made by a superstar.
Yaeji. You won't forget her name.
