Jaguar Jonze crafts songs of melancholic beauty woven with gun slinging guitar lines and a strikingly rich, yet intimate voice. Born in Japan to a Taiwanese mother and Australian father, Jaguar Jonze is as eclectic as her cultural upbringing oozing influences by the likes of Portishead, The Last Shadow Puppets, Nick Cave and Angel Olsen.
Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, the project stems from the mind of Deena Lynch (Queensland Music Award’s Most Promising Female Songwriter 2016). With the help of a band behind her, Jonze chisels a dark and dynamic soundscape without compromising her dulcet voice that transmits raw, intense emotion.
Jonze has spent the last 2 years between bunkering in a basement of Brisbane and a studio in the concrete jungle of Jakarta to harness a body of work that is nostalgic yet distinctive. From here comes Jonze’s debut single ‘You Got Left Behind’ – a driving, upbeat song suspended delicately above a breathtakingly haunting undercurrent.
“'You Got Left Behind' is about a few things - namely growing up and seeing people have a resistance to do so. With that came the torment of watching loved ones fall into a cycle of self-victimisation, self-harm and self-medication. I wrote the song around the time I was drawing a particular piece for my artistic project, Spectator Jonze.” Jonze says.
Her debut single ‘You Got Left Behind’ is out now and from this weekend can be heard on Asian Pop Radio. In support of the release, Jaguar Jonze will be performing shows in Australia and South East Asia where she will also showcase some of her forthcoming musical catalogue.
Infused with gun slingin’ country riffs, delicate string sections, and sounds reminiscent of Jonze's oriental background, ‘You Got Left Behind’ is driving, upbeat, and a real journey. The track was recorded in between Out With The In Studios with Hugh Middleton (Mid Ayr, Trouble with Templeton) and Jaguar Jonze's own home. Also mixed by Alex L'Estrange (Mid Ayr) in the UK and mastered by Steve Fallone of Sterling Sound in the US.
Despite being yet to make her live debut, Jaguar Jonze has already performed at Singapore’s Music Matters Festival this week gone, as well as the International Indie Music Festival in Indonesia.
Her first steps include showcases across Music Matters in Singapore, a single release party at The Foundry in hometown Brisbane and International Indie Music Festival for Pekan Raya in Jakarta, Indonesia.
An enigmatic yet vulnerable songwriter, Jaguar Jonze delivers defiant ferocity through smoky vocals that shift between fragile and forceful and a mature musicality that provides sweetness through dissonance.
