Below: (podcast) Joni Sheila speaks to Jay John on Asian Pop Radio
Joni Sheila has a pretty amazing day job, she spends her time travelling the globe busking, sharing her beautiful voice with street audiences, sometimes in venues back home in Belgium. Currently she is spending a year in Melbourne and that's where Jay John speaks to her now, from the JOY studios on Bourke street where she has just picked up a permit to perform for the next two months. Performing on Bourke Street for a street artist/ busker is highly sort after and she's about to join that somewhat exclusive club.
Joni Sheila is a half-Filipino, half-Belgian singer-songwriter and street performer who grew up in Gent, Belgium. She was named after Joni Mitchell. She taught herself to play the guitar and to sing. By competing in several music contests and working with other artists, she has gained a lot of experience. She also has a communication management degree and applies her communication skills to her music on stage, online and in the streets.
In June 2013 Joni launched a successful crowd funding campaign to record her debut album "Change". It was released on November 7th, 2014. A year later Joni was invited to Vienna (Austria) to give a TEDx talk about her experiences as a street performer. Watch her talk here: http://bit.ly/1QaKM7J
In November 2016 Joni commenced a busking tour around Australia. She is currently planted in Melbourne. She won the Time Out Melbourne "Battle of the Busker 2017" as the only solo and female street performer. At the same time she is creating new songs inspired by her travels. She wants to release an EP this year using Patreon: www.patreon.com/jonisheila.
