Our team member Cassanda Breadsell (aka Worlds Oldest Kpop Fan) recently went along to the Brisbane leg of the One OK Rock Australian tour. We don't know who was more excited, her or the guys themselves if this photo is the proof. In the podcast below Casandra speaks to Jay John to reflect on what she says was the best concert she has been to, as well as filling her report below:
Friday night 6 Oct, will be a night I won’t forget in a hurry. I was going to see One OK Rock for their first headline show of their sold out Australian tour AND I get to meet them with a photo op too!!
For those of us lucky enough to get VIP we were taken into the venue around 7pm, where we were told what was going to happen and what not to do…no groping, no picking them up…and I can understand why…they are tiny!! When they came out the side of the stage we all screamed excitedly, I cried, and then they smiled and waved to us, then said thank you to us for coming. We all got to hug them and they all said thank you to us before we had our picture taken with them. I MAY have held onto Toru a little longer than I should have, he smelled so nice lol.
Then came the painstaking wait for the show to start at around 10, honestly think it started later, it was a blur. Ticket advertised with special guest, turned out it was DJ for 2hrs. While he played great music, he in no way interacted with the crowd by trying to hype us up more for the boys.
FINALLY, the lights went off and the blue spot lights shone down on stage as the traditional music that is the intro to Bombs Away started. From the first word the crowd song along to every song, leaving singer Taka at one point in the show to comment how great it was we were singing in Japanese. From the smiles on their faces you could tell they were blown away.
Listen to Asian Pop Radio where we stream Asia-wide hits 24/7.
They slowed it down with Take What You Want. There was a moment of dramatic silence to build for the song, but some yobbo couldn’t resist ruining it by yelling out “You’re a legend Taka!”, he lifted his head and laughed along with crowd, then put his head down again. This time the crowd was shhhing idiots trying to ruin the moment. One girl yelled “Taka I want your baby”, he looked up saying “almost there” then started singing “ Can you hear me? I'm trying to hear you Silence strikes like a hurricane..” it gave me chills.
The set was a mix of fan favs and songs off their AMBITION cd. As fan favs go Clock Strikes was AMAZING. Taka’s voice is so strong that when he held a note during this, it seemed an eternity of unwavering intensity that got stronger the longer he held on to it. When the song ended Ryota was given the spotlight to go crazy with his bass slapping best, Toru took over with a highly charged guitar solo, before Tomoya was let loose on his drums…to short sadly they are sooooo talented.
We Are closed the set and it was the song fans had been waiting for the most from the clapping and cheering. They left after the song finished, but we were having none of that with cries of one more song….which they did American Girls. Taka very cheekily changed it to Australian Girls, which of course we loved! Then sadly that was it. The guys waved and couldn’t stop grinning at us. You could see that they had had as much fun as the fans and that always makes it so much enjoyable. Taka told us they will be working on a new album soon and promised they will be back. I’m sure Aussie fans will hold him to it!
