Regarded as one of the classics of Indonesian cinema, this renowned film follows Iskandar, a veteran of the Indonesian War of Independence, as he returns to civilian life only to find that the new society is very different from the ideals he fought for.
Hailed as Indonesia’s first modern psychological drama, the film explores the reality of a newly independent Indonesia that is torn between different values and ambitions, government repression and bourgeois complacency. It also portrays the rise of the corruption that still persists today. A visually and dramatically potent film about anger and disillusionment Restored in collaboration with the Martin Scorsese World Cinema Foundation
