Tonight at the Indonesian Film Festival in Melbourne, "Tales of the Otherwords". Director B.W. Purba Negara found the seed for this film in his experiences as a volunteer burying unknown victims of the 2004 tsunami. Ziarah is a word derived from the Arabic for pilgrimage and it still has that usage in the IndoMalay languages.
On the surface this gentle story appears to be about a very old woman who is searching for the grave of her husband who disappeared decades earlier. Beneath that layer there is a slow bubbling to the surface of truth that has been forgotten or deliberately buried. The old lady’s personal journey allows the audience to uncover secrets both private and historical. Sebastian Partogi of the Jakarta Post wrote in his review that Ziarah is a metaphor for Indonesia’s ahistorical society. In the Philippines it won the Best Film category at the Salamindanaw Asian Film Festival 2016.

The 13th annual Indonesian Film Festival (IFF) Australia presents a lineup of six diverse Indonesian films from the 26th of April to the 2nd of May, 2018 at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), Melbourne. The event aims to celebrate Indonesia’s burgeoning cinema and promote the appreciation of Indonesian culture in Australia in an attempt to bridge the gap between these two major Asia Pacific nations that are geographically close yet cognitively apart. All films have English subtitles and will be followed by a Q&A session with our guest filmmakers and hosted by Australian film critic Peter Krausz (Movie Metropolis).
