If you mention Asian music, thoughts come to mind of Kpop, Jpop and Jrock, but another Asian country is starting to let the western world know how talented their artists are. Vietnam is starting to emerge as a country full of promising singers and musicians that the rest of the music loving world is starting to pay attention too.
365daband is arguably the most well know group thanks to mega hits such as Get on the Floor, Where You Do Not Belong, Bong Bong Bang Bang and Find My Love, which saw them team with popular girl group X5. Their split gave members the opportunity to work on their own projects, such as Issac forging a successful solo career with songs such as Get Down and Mr Right.
Recently, singer My Tam became the 1st Vietnamese pop singer to crack Billboards World Albums. The album TÂM 9, climbed to 10th spot on the charts, giving her another reason to celebrate, as the release marked her 20th anniversary in the industry.
Winner of 2012’s The Voice, Hương Tràm’s - I Want You Now released in Dec caused a stir with the accompanying racy clip and sexy moves. After releasing the haunting Em Gai Mua (Love in Rain ), which broke the record for the most heard song since digital music became available in Vietnam and has close to 96 million views on the clip, she is a singer making people take note of her versatility and one to add to your collection.
Many artists are using a variety of styles of music. Min is an ex member of ST.319, a Hanoi based Kpop cover dance group, who uses that Kpop influence in her solo tracks such as the catchy Ghen (Jealousy), which also features talented rapper Erik and the more mellow Co Em Cho (I Will be Waiting), which has the cutest Hello Kitty influenced clip and has been viewed nearly 52 million times.
LẠC TRÔI (Lost & Floating) by SƠN TÙNG M-TP received close to 200 million views for his traditional folk/rap based song featuring a visually stunning clip that received 5 million views on the day of its release. Reggae/rap also was hit with Quăng tao cái boong (Pass Me the Bong) by Huynh James & PJNBoys getting 108 million hits, that will have you nodding along to the tune from the first beat.
Vietnam is showing the world they are just as talented as their Asian neighbours, and thanks to the internet, people are discovering that these, and many more artists can pull on your heart strings and leave an annoying earworm you won’t be able to get rid of for days, just like BTS or AKB48…just let it move you.
